About the Painting
Checkered and Chic is what happens when a pit lane and a fashion runway share the same studio. A saturated pink field sets the tone, and the gears step onto it like they own the place: a giant turquoise sprocket at the center, tangerine and violet cogs spinning around it, and a few cheerful faces peeking out from the crowd. Diamond checkerboards, rainbow stripes, spirals, and a crisp black-and-white band along the bottom edge keep the whole composition snapping with rhythm and attitude.
I love a painting that is confident enough to be playful. Every gear here has its own personality. Some are bold and graphic, some are soft and floral, and some are simply delighted to be included. There is no single "right" way to be a gear in this world, and nothing has to blend in to belong. The patterns clash and the colors argue, and somehow it all works. It's a lot like the women I paint for, who are fierce and feminine, polished and a little rebellious, and never one thing at a time.
The checkered motif is a nod to the racing flag, but I wanted to turn it into a celebration instead of a finish line. This is the energy of arriving in style, with the engine of your own life humming and your best outfit on. It's about taking the machinery of ambition, effort, and speed and dressing it up in joy.
